Kiran's heart pounded as he pulled Lyra to her feet. The corridor ahead was a twisted mess of metal and sparks. They had to find another way.
"This way!" Lyra shouted, tugging him toward a narrow maintenance shaft. They squeezed inside just as another tremor shook the station.
The shaft was cramped and dark. Kiran could feel the heat of Lyra's breath on his neck as they crawled forward. The rumble of explosions echoed through the metal walls.
"Where are we going?" Kiran whispered.
"Maintenance tunnels," Lyra replied. "They run throughout the whole station. We can use them to reach the docking bay."
They emerged into a dimly lit tunnel. Pipes and cables snaked along the walls. The polished floors of the upper levels were replaced by grated metal walkways.
Lyra took the lead, confidently navigating the maze-like passages. Kiran was impressed by her knowledge of the station's layout. It could mean the difference between escape and capture.
An alarm blared nearby, making them both jump. "Security's not far behind," Kiran said. "We need to move faster."
They broke into a run, their footsteps clanging on the metal grating. Lyra skidded to a stop at an intersection, quickly checking a nearby map before choosing a direction.
The tunnels twisted and turned. Kiran lost all sense of direction, trusting Lyra to guide them. His legs burned from the exertion, but fear kept him moving.
Rounding a corner, they nearly collided with a figure hunched over a computer terminal. Kiran tensed, ready for a fight, but Lyra held up a hand.
"Mara?" she asked cautiously.
The figure spun around, revealing a young woman with wild hair and wide eyes. "Lyra? What are you doing down here?"
"No time to explain," Kiran cut in. "We need to get to the docking bay. Can you help us?"
Mara hesitated, her fingers still dancing over the keyboard. "I heard the alarms. You're the ones they're after, aren't you?"
Lyra nodded. "Please, Mara. We need your help."
Mara bit her lip, then nodded. "Alright, but you're taking me with you. I've uncovered some things about this station - things that make me a target too."
Kiran wanted to argue, but another explosion rocked the tunnel. "Fine," he said. "Let's move."
The trio set off deeper into the maintenance tunnels. Mara's knowledge of the station's systems complemented Lyra's understanding of its layout. Together, they made quick progress.
"Wait," Mara hissed, pulling them into an alcove. A group of security guards rushed past, their boots thundering on the metal walkway.
Kiran held his breath until the sound faded. "That was close," he whispered.
They pressed on, the tension mounting with each step. The docking bay was close now - Kiran could feel it.
Suddenly, they emerged into a wider corridor. Ahead, Kiran could see the entrance to the docking bay. His heart leapt with hope.
That hope was quickly dashed as a squad of security personnel rounded the corner, blocking their path. Weapons raised, they advanced on the trio.
"Freeze!" one of them shouted. "Don't move!"
Kiran's mind raced, searching for a way out. They were so close - he couldn't let it end here.
Just then, a figure stepped out of the shadows behind the security team. It was a man Kiran didn't recognize - tall, with cybernetic enhancements visible on his arms and face.
Before anyone could react, the cyborg raised his hands. The lights in the corridor flickered and died, plunging them into darkness.
Chaos erupted. Kiran felt Lyra grab his arm, pulling him forward. They stumbled through the darkness, trusting their mysterious ally to keep the guards occupied.
They burst into the docking bay, squinting in the sudden light. Alarms blared all around them.
"There!" Lyra pointed to a sleek research vessel. "That's our best bet!"
They sprinted across the bay, Mara already working to hack the ship's systems. The loading ramp lowered just as they reached it.
Kiran leapt into the pilot's seat, his hands flying over the controls. "Strap in!" he shouted.
The engines roared to life as Lyra and Mara secured themselves. Kiran could see guards pouring into the bay, but it was too late.
With a lurch, the ship lifted off. Kiran angled it toward the bay doors, praying they would open in time.
At the last second, the massive doors began to part. Kiran gunned the engines, shooting out into open space.
For a moment, relief washed over him. They had made it. They were free.
Then a new alarm blared in the cockpit. Lyra's face paled as she checked the scanners.
"We've got company," she said grimly. "Multiple ships on an intercept course."
