The world shattered into fragments of light as Arin Draxis's eyes snapped open. His head throbbed, vision blurring as he tried to focus on his surroundings. Cold metal pressed against his back, sending a shiver down his spine. Where was he? The question pounded in his skull, but no answer came.

Arin bolted upright, heart racing. Six other teenagers lay sprawled around him, their bodies twitching as they started to stir. Panic clawed at his throat. He didn't recognize any of them. Worse, he couldn't remember how he'd gotten here – or anything before waking up in this strange room.

"Hey," he croaked, voice raspy from disuse. "Wake up. Something's wrong."

A girl with chestnut hair jerked awake, green eyes wide with confusion. She scrambled to her feet, fists clenched. "Who are you? Where are we?"

"I – I don't know," Arin admitted, frustration building. "I can't remember anything."

The others were coming to now, faces etched with fear and bewilderment. A lanky boy with messy dark hair pressed his hands to his temples. "My head... it's like everything's been erased."

"We need to stay calm," the girl said, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. "I'm Lyra. At least, I think I am. That name feels right."

"Arin," he offered, the syllables feeling both familiar and foreign on his tongue. "And you're right, panicking won't help. We need to figure out where we are and how to get out of here."

The room was stark, its walls a gleaming white that hurt Arin's eyes. There were no windows, just a single door with no visible handle. The ceiling pulsed with a soft, eerie light that cast strange shadows across their faces.

"I'm Kellan," the lanky boy said, pushing his hair out of his eyes. "And I think I might be able to help with that door."

As the others introduced themselves – names like fragments of identity floating in the void of their memories – Kellan approached the door. His fingers skimmed over the smooth surface, searching for any irregularity.

"There's got to be some kind of mechanism," he muttered. "No keyhole, no biometrics that I can see..."

Lyra joined him, her gaze sharp as she examined the door frame. "Look," she said, pointing to a barely visible seam. "There's definitely a way to open this. We just need to figure out how."

Arin's skin prickled with unease. He paced the room, searching for anything that might give them a clue. His eyes landed on strange devices clasped around each of their wrists. "Hey, has anyone else noticed these?"

The others crowded around, examining the sleek metal bands. They were seamless, with no apparent way to remove them. A small screen flickered to life as Arin touched his, displaying a string of numbers and symbols he couldn't decipher.

"Some kind of identification, maybe?" one of the other girls suggested. "Or a tracking device?"

The thought sent a chill through the group. Arin's gaze darted to the walls, searching for cameras or other signs of surveillance. He found none, but that didn't mean they weren't being watched.

"Guys," Kellan called, excitement coloring his voice. "I think I've found something!"

They rushed to where he stood, hands hovering over a section of wall near the door. As they watched, faint lines of text began to appear, etched into the surface as if by an invisible hand.

"'The key lies within,'" Lyra read aloud, brow furrowed. "'Unity unlocks the path forward.'"

"What the hell does that mean?" one of the boys growled, frustration evident in his clenched jaw.

Arin's mind raced, piecing together the clues. The wristbands, the cryptic message... "Our devices," he said suddenly. "They must be connected somehow. Kellan, can you interface with the door using yours?"

Kellan's eyes lit up with understanding. He pressed his wrist against the door, concentration etched across his features. For a moment, nothing happened. Then, with a soft hiss, the door slid open.

A collective gasp rippled through the group. Beyond the threshold lay a vast, shadowy expanse. Towering walls stretched into the distance, forming a labyrinth of twisting corridors and hidden chambers.

"It's a maze," Lyra breathed, awe and trepidation mingling in her voice.

Arin stepped forward, peering into the gloom. Something about this place tugged at the edges of his fractured memory, a nagging sense of familiarity he couldn't quite grasp.

"We can't stay here," he said, turning back to the others. "Whatever this place is, whoever put us here – they want us to go through that maze."

"It could be dangerous," one of the girls pointed out, fear evident in her trembling voice.

"Staying put might be even more dangerous," Lyra countered. "We don't know how long our supplies will last, or if anyone's coming for us. Our best chance is to stick together and try to find a way out."

Reluctant nods met her words. They gathered what little they had – the clothes on their backs and the mysterious devices on their wrists – and stepped out into the unknown.

The maze loomed before them, a sprawling labyrinth of metal and shadows. Arin's heart pounded as they took their first tentative steps. The floor beneath their feet was solid, but something about it felt... off.

A low, mechanical whir filled the air. Arin froze, every muscle tensing. "Do you hear that?"

Before anyone could respond, the section of floor directly behind them began to retract with a grinding screech. Panic exploded through the group as they realized the deadly trap they'd walked into.

"Run!" Arin shouted, grabbing Lyra's arm and sprinting forward.

They tore through the maze, feet pounding against the rapidly disappearing floor. Kellan stumbled, nearly falling into the growing chasm. Arin hauled him up, dragging him along as they raced for safety.

The mechanical whir grew louder, more urgent. Arin's lungs burned as he pushed himself harder, fear giving him speed he didn't know he possessed. Up ahead, a raised platform came into view – their only hope.

"There!" Lyra gasped, pointing. "We have to make it!"

With a final burst of desperation, they hurled themselves onto the platform. Arin's heart thundered in his chest as he looked back, seeing nothing but a yawning abyss where they had just been standing.

They huddled together, chests heaving, as the reality of their situation sank in. This wasn't just a maze – it was a deadly gauntlet designed to test them. And they had only just begun.

"What now?" Kellan asked, voice shaky.

Arin met Lyra's determined gaze, seeing his own resolve mirrored there. "We keep going," he said. "We solve this maze, we find a way out. Together."
